Counting Carbon: A Growing Movement

Is calculating a company's carbon footprint necessary? Better yet, what exactly is a carbon footprint? Today, people throw around the term 'carbon footprint' without much thought or precision. It has become another buzzword to draw attention.

SAN DIEGO, CA, January 15, 2010 /Corporations PR News/ -- "I have seen firsthand the retreating glaciers in the Himalaya, Alaska, Arctic, and Antarctic, I want to bring attention to these facts and as a climber who makes his living in these pristine areas I have to do everything I can to personally help!"- Ed Viesturs, America's leading high altitude mountaineer and Source 44's Head Spokesperson and investor

Is calculating a company's carbon footprint necessary? Better yet, what exactly is a carbon footprint? Today, people throw around the term 'carbon footprint' without much thought or precision. It has become another buzzword to draw attention.

Source 44, a leading sustainability information management company, and the world's only supplier of Material Footprint Data Sheets , is commonly asked, "What is a carbon footprint?" In short, a carbon footprint measures the total amount of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions released into the environment. GHG's are measured in equivalent units of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), for instance Methane is a greenhouse gas but it has a global warming potential 23 X that of CO2 so 1 kilogram of methane emissions are expressed as 23 kilograms of CO2, fun huh?

Source 44 believes accurate measurement is needed in order to understand the full impact companies and people have on their environment. Calculating carbon footprints will raise awareness of environmental impacts and provide measurements for comparisons with alternative materials and processes.

We believe that as we begin to understand the sources of the materials we use and the impact they have on our environment, we can, as a global community, begin to make decisions that will bring us closer to a carbon neutral society (net zero carbon footprint). What does carbon neutralality mean for us here in the US of A? It means less dependency on foreign oil, it means less local air pollution and yes less greenhouse gases contributed to the planet.

Ed Viesturs has committed to carbon neutral climbing. Later this year, Ed will be climbing Mount Vinson in Antarctica (http://www.edviesturs.com), travel and equipment carbon neutral! Follow the lead from Ed Viesturs who is geared up to count carbon on his expedition.

With this in mind, Source 44 has a challenge for you: This year, Count Carbon. Through offsetting our energy consumption using Carbonfund.org, we are proud to say Source 44 is carbon neutral. Other ways Source 44 conserves energy; our offices have natural lighting working quarters which allows half employees to leave the lights off, one-trip lunch outings which eliminate the need for employees to drive out to lunch, encourages carpooling, recycled supplies in the office, carbon neutral drinking water, web-hosting, and printing.
